Whichever way one comes to the Island, the trip itself justifies the journey. From the North, drivers proceed the last 50 kilometres through the LaCloche mountains. This drive has been described as one of the prettiest in Canada, and almost certainly is the prettiest drive in Ontario. Access is through the swing bridge in Little Current. The Little Current Swing Bridge is in the Ontario Heritage Bridge Program.
Many visitors to Manitoulin arrive from the South, by ferry (the MS Chi-Cheemaun), which sails from May to October (it is an hour and forty minute ride).
Manitoulin features world class outdoor activities, including fishing, hunting and hiking. Incidentally, the cottage is not far from the Cup and Saucer Trail, where guests can hike the Niagara Escarpment.
History abounds in Manitoulin. Little Current and Manitowaning were both bustling lumber ports at the turn of the twentieth century. Tourism, though, is their mainstay today. Guests at the cottage may choose to spend a day in nearby Manitowaning, visiting the Assignack Museum and viewing the S.S. Norisle, which used to ply the waters of Georgian Bay until retired in 1974.
Manitoulin is host to several festivals each year, including the Haweater Festival on the Civic Day long weekend in the beginning of August each year. Contact us early to reserve the cottage for that weekend. Wikwemikong, the unceded Indian Reserve on the Island, hosts a Pow Pow each Summer, which attracts visitors from all over the World. Another weekend sees the Island kept dark, to enhance the star gazing possibilities. There is an annual yacht race between Mackninac Michigan and Little Current.
